Double Up! KD 10 Sneaker Masks

It’s only right to bring some playoff heat to the sneaker mask releases, so now’s a perfect time to bring you the newest KD masks. Each made from a single pair of size 17 KD 10s. Why size 17? That’s because they came direct from Kevin Durant’s personal collection!

This mask was a collaboration with Reshoevn8r and Set Free of The Compound. The good folks at Reshoevn8r introduced me to Set Free and we began discussing creating a custom mask from one of his many rare and exclusive pairs. The next week Set Free and I met up in person while he was in the Bay Area. It just happened to be Christmas Eve, and his birthday! What’s the right time to tell you guys that it also happened to be at Kevin Durant’s house? Sounds surreal, maybe it was, but it really was just a circle of guys talking sneakers, masks and superheroes. Definitely unforgettable.

That’s also when KD showed me one of his sneaker closets and blessed me with some pairs for my Chopping Block. Set Free and I chose the NikeLabs for his mask, but Kevin handed me a pair that I knew was special. Maybe I didn’t know how special at the time.

It was the Doernbecher KD 10 and there were only 3 pairs in the world. One pair went to Amyiah Robinson who designed this colorway for her Air Max Thea release. One pair was auctioned for charity and raised $35,000 for Doernbecher Hospital. The third pair was given to Kevin Durant, who gave them to me to chop down.

We released a few images of the DB KD 10 mask on Instagram, but it’s hard to separate the stories attached to these 2 masks. Can’t tell one without the other. It’s also a great example of how the same style shoe can be used in a number of ways to create a unique mask. And how color blocking and materials change the character of the mask.

Both KD masks released today made their debut during All Star Weekend at Baron Davis’s For the Culture event.

Set Free’s mask was made from the NikeLab KD 10s in olive green and glow in the dark. It is also based on The Compound‘s gas mask logo, featuring the double hoses and XL air canister. I cast custom glow in the dark resin parts and painted both the canister and lens frames with a glow in the dark spray paint.
