My 118th sneaker mask marks another important milestone, the destruction of one of the most coveted sneakers in the world today. Pairs of the shoe retailed at $250 when they released, but today resale prices can cost you as much as $5000. The Nike Yeezy 2.

The Red Octobers that hit my block weren’t your average pair either. Custom painted from sole to liner in rich golds, the customs belonged to @zaaidahabi who commissioned & now owns the mask.  To better work with the materials I took the time to strip away the original paint to regain flexibility of the materials. That flexibility is what allows me to shape the masks I make. The task at hand however was to create a golden Yeezy II mask so I chose to gold leaf the mask once it was complete. This was appropriate from an art history stand point as a red waxy base was used as adhesive to apply gold leaf to illuminated manuscripts – “gold leaf-ing” a Red October mask echoes that tradition.

There are 2 more Yeezy 2 masks in the works so be sure to follow @FreehandProfit on IG & Twitter!

This mask was created to resemble the Egyptian God, Horus, who is featured on the Yeezy II tongue. I used a cast resin portion of the sole along the edge of the beak beneath the eyes and the signature back ridges make up the lower beak and forehead. The top beak was shaped, sculpted and sanded to closely resemble a falcon’s beak.

Unlike any other sneaker masks I’ve made in the past, this piece features a woven headdress made from metallic gold SB laces by Fully Laced, hanging from the woven laces are cast resin scales – made from a mold of the sole (which originated from the Nike Air Tech Challenge II).
