Writer’s Mask no.12 – Mask 356

May 7, 2011 – Writer’s Mask no.12

The twelfth Writer’s Mask is the first of the final ten.  These masks have been a transformation of my blackbook work.  Graffiti has been a part of my life for more than a decade now and as an artist it’s a difficult mask to take off.  My fellow writers may think I’m crazy for that last statement but Upski said it best in “Bomb the Suburbs” that graf is for kids.  I’m not trying to be all city king, that’s a task for the immortal and invincible youth.  I don’t think I’ll ever give it up completely though, it’s too ingrained in me.  The task at hand however is to use what I learned writing and apply things like the letter forms, the motion, the weight of a piece to my future work.  I think if you look close you’ll see it’s influences in my Guerrilla Art Squadron masks.
